Rie Takahashi was born and raised in Kobe and has loved singing since childhood. She grew up influenced by her mother, who often listened to American and British music, and by her father who was a magician. She started on a Hammond organ at the age of seven and began her development of music sensibility and rhythm.
Rie made her professional jazz singer debut in 2007 and performed live on NHK television (Japan’s national broadcaster) in June of that year. She soon became a regular performer at SONE, Kobe’s top live jazz club and has become one of the most popular jazz vocalists in western Japan. Rie won the top prize at the Saitama Shintoshin Jazz Vocal Contest in November 2013, which launched her career in Tokyo as well.
She is a certified Jazz Chants’ instructor, as recognized by its founder, Carolyn Graham. Jazz Chants is highly regarded in Japan as the most useful way to master spoken American English pronunciation, intonation, stress, and rhythm. Rie is the only certified instructor in Japan who is actively teaching Jazz Chants and Vocals by using her own unique methods.
