Kat Edmonson

Tue, Feb 25 - Wed, Feb 26, 2020

On her upcoming 2020 recording "Dreamers Do" jazz vocalist Kat Edmondson explores the shared human struggle around daring to dream and it illuminates a range of emotional and psychological consequences that can happen along the way. A question gets raised in Kat’s vulnerable original, “Too Late to Dream”: “Are the messages we receive as children about following our dreams relevant through adult life?” The album is a mix of Edmonson’s original songs and re-imagined Disney songs from the mid-twentieth century and takes place over the course of one, sleepless night.

The son of Malian music royalty, the legendary Ali Farka Toure, Vieux Farka Touré is often referred to as the Hendrix of the Sahara, a title meant more to convey the point that the man is a brilliant guitarist than to suggest that there's anything remotely Hendrix-esque about his playing (which there isn't). Drums that are both metronomic and feline, a dobro-guitar with riffs made from embers, telluric basslines that seem to escape from a dented tuba… Here is Delgres, a power-trio that’s reinventing the blues by injecting an abrasive rock transe in it, recalling the Tuaregs’ soul as much as The Black Keys or John Lee Hooker’s, while carrying Louis Delgres’ secular message : his heroic fight against slavery in the Guadeloupe island. This is how this rebellious and burning music means so much nowadays, by speaking to us through shivers, and vibrating our bodies as well as our minds.
