Pat Metheny announces his latest release SIDE-EYE NYC out September 10th on BMG Modern Recordings, an exciting new release featuring the 20-time Grammy-winner with new young stars. With the announcement he’s rolled out his 100+ date Word Tour and it all starts right here at Jazz Alley!

Pat Metheny is still seeking breathtakingly new vistas" - NPR, All Things Considered

As on the recording, the live version of SIDE-EYE NYC will feature the phenomenally talented pianist/organist/keyboardist James Francies. The drum chair in SIDE-EYE has been filled to-date by some of the most exciting players around including Eric Harland, Anwar Marshall and most notably, Marcus Gilmore, who is spotlighted on the recording. The exciting young New Orleans drummer, Joe Dyson, will be featured in the upcoming live performances around the world.

Unlike almost any other modern musician, Pat Metheny remains uniquely unpredictable. A new Metheny record could be almost anything as the only musician to have won twelve of his twenty Grammy awards in twelve different categories. His recent recording Road To The Sun caused a sensation in the classical music world for its intricate and emotionally satisfying chamber music compositions. At the same time, its immediate predecessor From This Place was Downbeat magazine’s "Jazz Record of the Year" as an expansive and timeless large-scale work. Once again, a surprise is in store for the legions of fans Metheny has collected across the globe. Widely sought out amongst sonic worlds for decades, his collaborators on past projects have included Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock and David Bowie.

SIDE-EYE NYC deftly balances a mix of stunning new originals with inventive re-workings of some of Metheny’s most beloved compositions such as “Timeline,” which originally featured Metheny performing with fellow icons Michael Brecker and Elvin Jones. Now bringing that same unmistakable spirit to a new crop of players who grew up with his music as a part of their musical heritage, Metheny’s SIDE-EYE NYCseamlessly flows in his usual genre-defying way from post-organ-trio grooves to expansive mini-suite forms to simply Metheny at his most rocking.

So, what is SIDE-EYE?

Pat explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing platform to host a rotating cast of the newer generations of musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way. From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians hiring me, which gave me a chance to develop through the prism of their experiences and the particular demands of what their music implied.”
