artist info

yukino was born in 1958 in Nishinomiya, a city adjacent to Kobe. She has always had a passion for music, starting piano lessons at the age of five and singing since she can remember. She spent her junior high years in Los Angeles where she practiced her piano and vocal skills with her school’s choir. She studied English and became an English teacher in her late 20s. It was around this time that she began to fall in love with jazz , receiving vocal training, taking jazz piano lessons, and frequently joining local jam sessions. At one of these sessions, she became enchanted with a talented guitarist, with whom she formed a duo. The two would become inseparable in subsequent years, touring Japan with their music and recording two albums along the way. Thirty years later, they still perform together, albeit now as husband and wife, under the band name of NY Square.

NY Square has performed everywhere from local live houses to bars and restaurants to some of Japan’s top jazz festivals. Yukino often does solo performances as well, frequently accompanying herself on piano. In 2014, she won first place at the renowned Niigata Jazz Festival for her solo vocal performance.

Since she first entered the Kobe Shinkaichi Jazz Vocal Queen Contest 15 years ago, yukino has dreamt of taking her talents to America. Her years of hard work finally paid off this year when her first-place victory granted her the chance to perform for you in Seattle. Through the last thirty years, she has maintained her passion for jazz, and tonight, she looks to share that passion with you in her performance.

Message from yukino:

In Japan, one’s 60th birthday is auspicious. It is said that when you reach the age of 60, you have completed a life cycle and become newly born again. Getting the chance to close out my 60th year with a performance at Jazz Alley is nothing short of a dream come true.

I am so grateful to have this opportunity and look forward to a wonderful evening with you. I hope you enjoy my take on some of my favorite jazz standards from over the years.
