artist info

Henry Kapono is a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, thrilling performer, audience favorite—and multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination. He has taken home numerous Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year.

Henry keeps a lot of different irons in the fire. He has been at the creative forefront of contemporary Hawaiian music throughout his career – from Cecilio & Kapono in the 1970s and 80s, to launching his solo career that produced 17 albums and fans around the world, to his groundbreaking collaborations that fused the power of Hawaiian traditions with driving rock rhythms and a soundtrack for the new century. With this tour, Henry Kapono takes the audience “Back in the Day”, performing the much-loved Songs of C&K, from romantic ballads to songs of the land to island party tunes designed to “put a smile on your face and good feelings in your heart”. Special Guest John Valentine, Hawaii Music Award Winner, has spent most of his life entertaining in the heart of Waikiki. From shows to nightclubs, John has become known as Hawaii’s most versatile singer. Notes nephew Bruno Mars "He is one of my inspirations."

About Henry Kapono: Known as "Kapono", the Hawaiian word for righteous, Henry is pure Hawaiian, born and raised just outside Waikiki on the island of O‘ahu. He started singing in a children's church choir at age 5. His athletic abilities earned him a baseball scholarship to the renowned Punahou Academy (President Obama’s alma mater) and a football scholarship to the University of Hawai‘i. Injuries prevented a career as a professional football player, and moved him towards his passion for music. Though he had no formal musical training, he learned ‘ukulele from his father, then fell in love with the sound of guitar after seeing a friend play. Kapono's first gig had him singing folk songs in Waikiki. He moved on to the rock band Pakalolo, performing throughout Hawaii and the Far East in the late 60s. Stranded by a tour promoter in Vietnam, the band spent two years performing for the troops in Vietnam and Thailand. On his return to Hawai‘i, Kapono forged a musical partnership with Cecilio Rodriguez, and within a year, Columbia Records signed the new duo Cecilio & Kapono to a three-album deal. The C&K collaboration would produce eight albums and lasting fame. Going solo again in 1981, he began a prolific output of new songs and albums. He has appeared in the films Damien and Waterworld, as well as the Imax production Behold Hawaii, and on television (Magnum P.I., Byrds of Paradise, and Live with Regis & Kathy Lee). His children's book, A Beautiful Hawaiian Day, was published in 2000 and went on to win a Best Book Award in Hawai‘i. Kapono also received multiple civic awards, and in 1998 Honolulu's mayor decreed June 3 to be Henry Kapono Day.
