artist info
Seven-time Grammy nominee, Tierney Sutton has received 6 consecutive nominations for “Best Jazz Vocal Album”- a nomination for every project she has released for the last decade. With a recording and touring history spanning over 20 years and 9 CDs, The Tierney Sutton Band, “TSB” has traveled a rare path. Comprised of Sutton and instrumental virtuosos, the band functions as a true collaborative unit and makes all musical as well as business decisions as partners.
“A serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level “ – The New York Times
Tierney Sutton is the calm current flowing through the turbulent water of jazz vocals, making big changes and important recordings without stirring the water too much. Her creative presence and influence cannot be denied when listening to Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens, Renee Yoxon and Mark Ferguson among many others. Sutton's musical metaphysics is grounded in cool yet penetrating exploration using the traditional jazz instrumentation and songbook, transforming both in the bargain.
In addition to fronting the Tierney Sutton Band, she has enjoyed collaborations with The Turtle Island String Quartet, Hubert laws, Peter Erskine, Larry Goldings, Kate McGarry, Al Jarreau and many others. Tierney has headlined in recent years at The Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and Jazz At Lincoln Center. She tours extensively around the world and also has been featured on film and television soundtracks including The Academy Award-nominated film “The Cooler” as well as on television commercials (BMW, Green Giant, Yoplait Yogurt, Coke). When she is off the road, Tierney is in demand as both a producer and vocal educator. She taught for over a decade at USC’s Thornton School of Music and served 5 of those years as USC’s Jazz Vocal Department Head. She has spent 6 years as the Vocal Department Head at The Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena, CA. where she developed a new curriculum for vocal musicians. Tierney has taught and mentored some of music’s finest new generation of singers including Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens and Sara Gazarek. As both a recording artist and arranger, Tierney Sutton is often described as “a singer’s singer,” but just as often, she is described as a “musician’s singer” who uses her voice like an instrument.
