Within a year’s time, Californian singer-songwriter & harmonica player Joe Conte lost both the love of his life and his father to cancer. These personal tragedies forced him to take a step back and see the value of the life he was leading, the importance of being conscientious, and the intrinsic value and potential that comes from his decisions. He decided that he needed to find himself again, to embark on a journey that would help him to find his soul, to go to Mali and perform at 'Le Festival au Desert.' It was during his time in Mali that he formed JeConte & the Mali All-Stars.

In a set of solid grooves, JeConte & the Mali All-Stars combine West African music with reggae, funk and New Orleans R&B. JeConte teamed up with a number of musicians from Mali to produce Mali Blues, the debut album from JeConte & the Mali All-Stars on Soulnow Records. Recorded in Bamako during the coup d’etat in 2012, Mali Blues offers a message of peace from many of the musicians directly affected by military and political uprisings in West Africa.

JeConte brings lightening harmonica chops and a deep, bluesy vocal style to the band. His performance is a one-of-a-kind, high vibrational musical experience- embodying what live, funky, blues-rock is all about. Residing in Northern California and having spent a great deal of time in New Orleans, JeConte has played with multiple bands over the years and believes that JeConte & the Mali All-Stars is a culmination of these efforts.

Djeli Mahamadou Kone is JeConte & the Mali Allstars, ‘Mad Percussionist.’ He is a master at percussion. He performs on the traditional Malian bass drum, the Kalabash and the ‘talking drum’, and a multitude of other percussive devices that he pulls from his bag-of-tricks. He also performs throughout Mali in many other projects. Mahamadou brings an incredible infectious energy to the Mali Allstars’ live performance with his wireless talking-drum magic.

Moustafa Kouyate strums and picks the N'goni and plays the scales and cadences in his own style but he also mirrors the techniques of both his Grandfather and his father Bassekou Kouyate who is named the "Master of the N'Goni " and has received many International awards and accolades. He is the son of Bassekou Kouyate, and certainly is his protege with a modern sound and process. Moustafa is so highly adept when producing his music whether it is in a live performance or just a jam. One notices that his mind is so 'in-tune' with his sound that he sends the melody lines into the room, transcending the listener to another time and space. This is complimentary for his various personal projects and serves his family band,' Ngoni Ba', as a truly unique Malian player.

Nominated now for the Juno achievement, the Canadian folk music awards and LADISC in Canada, with his album, 'Les frontieres imaginaires'. This CD is also nominated as the Best Traditional Album of the year.
