While PJI hopes to enhance everyone's appreciation of jazz, special attention is given to
introducing at-risk youth to the joys of playing and hearing jazz music.
For example, monthly "Meet The Masters" workshops are offered to about 200 at-risk children from
area social services agencies, schools, group homes, and shelters. These workshops include
lunch, a performance and an educational presentation by the
visiting artist. The presentation is designed to introduce youth to playing and appreciating
jazz as well as its historical and cultural significance. And, it is all for FREE!
Artists who have led these workshops include Chuck Mangione, Dr. Billy Taylor, Betty Carter, Maceo
Parker, Ernestine Anderson, Charlie Hunter and the Broadway cast of "Ain't Misbehavin'".
