The Pacific Jazz Institute and Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley present for two nights only, Brazilian vocalist /pianist Eliane Elias, touring in support of her latest release Bossa Nova Stories. Band members are Eliane Elias (piano and vocals), Ricardo Vogt (guitar), Marc Johnson (bass) and Rafael Barata (drums). Set times Tuesday and Wednesday are at 7:30PM. Doors open at 6pm on Tuesday and 5:30pm on Wednesday.
Of her latest release, Bossa Nova Stories (2009) the LA TIMES calls it, “A sophisticated pleasure.”
In it’s opening week, Bossa Nova Stories was the #2 album in sales in both Overall and Traditional Jazz Charts, Billboard Magazine, USA. It reached #1 on Itunes Top Jazz Albums, #2 on Itunes Top Latin Albums, #4 on Jazz Radio Airplay and it continues to receive glowing reviews. In July 2008, it debuted at #1 on the French Charts and remained #1 for three consecutive weeks. It’s was also the #1 Best Selling Jazz Vocal Album in Japan, May-June 2008 (Swing Journal).
EMI Japan released Eliane’s first live instrumental recording in July 2009. The CD is called Eliane Elias Plays Live. It was recorded on May 31, 2002 in Amsterdam and is an all instrumental trio recording, featuring Eliane on piano, Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums. The CD will be released in various other territories later in 2010, including the US.
With many awards under her belt including a Grammy nomination, Ms. Elias was featured in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s televised Second Annual “Celebration of America’s Music” at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, four times on Marian McPartland’s ‘Piano Jazz’, the JVC Festival with Sting, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso at Lincoln Center in New York, the televised Piano Grand, and a Gala celebration for the 300th Anniversary of the piano in Washington D.C., hosted by Billy Joel just to name a few.
With the release of Bossa Nova Stories, Eliane Elias takes her place in the pantheon of music giants. Demonstrating her unique gifts as a pianist, singer, composer and arranger as well as melding her immense talents in jazz, pop, classical and Brazilian music, she is as Jazziz Magazine has called her, “A Citizen of the World” and “ An Artist Beyond Category”.
